Google Toolbar Update noticed on 4/3/2010

April 4th 2010 - When I logged onto my computer this morning I noticed a few changes in the Google toolbar PageRank for a few of the web sites we monitor. I was surprised and did not expect the update. It has not even been 30 days since the last time I noticed an update.

On Page Search Engine Optimization

Here are some more on page SEO tips to employ while building your web site:

Image Alt Text
Alt text is the alternative text that a web browser will display if the picture can not load for some reason. This is not always seen by your visitors however it is always seen by search engine spiders.

You always want to include your keywords in the alternate text of your images.

Image File Names
When you upload your images remember to include your keyword in the file name when you save them.

As always don't just stuff your keywords but find creative ways to name them like rhinebeck_house.jpg would be a good name for a Realtor with a house for sale in Rhinebeck. Image.jpg will not help the SEO of your web site.

The above will also help your pictures come up when people are searching Google images as well.

HTML Heading tags - H1 H2
The H1 and H2 tag is a great spot to highlight your keywords for your visitors and search engines. the tags make finding relative content on your page easier by making the text in your headings larger and bold.

Search engines love to look here for keywords.

Internal Link Structure
It is important to properly link the internal pages of your web site. Static HTML links is the best. You don't want to use a JavaScript menu because it is not as easy for search engines to read.

Proper internal linking can also help you keep some of your Google pagerank and pass it around to other pages on your web site instead of giving it to the external web sites that you link to.

Content is KING
And don't forget it. You can apply every SEO technique  there is but if the keywords don't appear in the text on the site odds are you won't rank well for those keywords/keyword phrases.

Write custom title tags, keywords and descriptions for every page

Title Tags
Google would much prefer to see unique page titles and descriptions for each page of your web site. Also remember to include your keywords in your title tag. Don't over due it but definitely find creative ways to include your keywords. Never name your page something like "Home" or "home page".

Description Tags
Also include keywords in the description tag. This tag is not nearly as important as the title tag from an SEO standpoint but it does support the title tag and it is one of the most important things to get visitors to click on your web site when searching. If you don't use a description tag some search engines will grab "snippets" of text from your site and display it as the description.

Keywords tags
The keyword tag is not used as much anymore by search engines but sites like MSN may still use it. To be honest most of the time I leave this tag out since Google overlooks it and has it's own algorithm for determining what keyword/keyword phrases to rank a site for.

Instead of stuffing all of those keywords in the keyword tag I suggest you find creative ways to include your keywords in the  text on your web page.

Key Word Research - Keyword Analysis

The foundation for any search engine optimization strategy is good key word research.
Keyword research reveals the best keywords & keyword phrases to optimize your website for.

You want to find keywords/phrases related to your website that a lot of people search for but not a lot of websites are optimizing for. The way this is measured is called "KEI" or Keyword Effectiveness Index.
When Optimizing I like to seek out keywords/phrases with a KEI of 20 or above.

There are a million real estate agents in the world so if you are a real estate agent in the Hudson Valley you may want to optimize for "Hudson Valley real estate" or "Hudson Valley properties"  rather than "real estate" or "Properties".

When narrowing it down with location there is a lot less competition for the top spot on Google and the traffic generated will be targeted meaning that they are looking to buy your product or service and are in your area.

What is Search Engine optimization | SEO

Search engine optimization is the art of optimizing your web site for search engines. SEO's optimize web pages for 1 or 2 keywords each and try to obtain the first position in major search engine results (SERPS) such as Google, Bing & Yahoo.

Results can often be seen quickly however a good search engine optimization strategy is often implemented over time for best results. Ongoing SEO plans include  Monthly reporting of your rank in the SERPS as well as continual implementation of SEO to maintain your position.
